Hive Spy Remi

To bring this Saturn-inspired stealth game to life, I implemented a range of sound design techniques to simulate the feel and limitations of a 90s console.

At Naughty Monkey Studio, I created the sound design for the 32bit Game Jam 2022 entry Hive Spy Remi.

The project aimed for a Saturn-inspired stealth game aesthetic, so the audio design had to support that retro identity without feeling flat or generic. I used a range of sound design techniques to evoke the feel and limitations of 90s-era console audio while keeping moment-to-moment feedback clear for gameplay.

I worked closely with the composer to build a cohesive soundscape, combining custom-recorded footsteps, punches, swooshes, and interaction sounds with music that reacts dynamically to the game state.

All sound was implemented directly in the game engine without middleware. That meant keeping the system efficient and readable while still delivering responsive stealth feedback and enough sonic variation to support repeated attempts.

The final game ranked #5 out of 136 entries, and it remains a strong example of fast-turnaround game audio production under jam constraints.

Implementation notes

This project is a good example of practical game audio work for small teams: prioritising readable player feedback, shaping a consistent sonic identity quickly, and implementing directly in-engine when schedule or scope makes middleware unnecessary.
